QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team opened GLVC play in thrilling fashion on Friday night, outlasting Indianapolis in four sets (25-19, 25-23, 23-25, 27-25) inside Pepsi Arena. With the victory, the Hawks stretched their winning streak to seven matches and secured their 12th straight win at home, continuing to make Pepsi Arena one of the toughest venues for opponents in the conference.
The Hawks came out firing in the opening set, leaning heavily on senior outside hitter
Susanna Beretti to establish control early. Beretti's relentless swings kept the Greyhounds on their heels, and Quincy steadily built a lead before pulling away late to claim the opener 25-19. The second set proved to be a tighter battle, with Indianapolis pushing Quincy point for point. Trailing 21-20, the Hawks responded with a composed finish as Beretti and
Janelle Pye-Blacknard delivered key kills down the stretch to secure the 25-23 win and give Quincy a 2-0 lead.
Indianapolis refused to go away quietly in the third, capitalizing on Quincy miscues to steal momentum. The Greyhounds built a slim edge and fended off a late surge from the Hawks to take the frame 25-23 and extend the match. The fourth set became the most dramatic of the night, as both teams traded points deep into the frame. Quincy fought off multiple pushes from UIndy, and with the score knotted at 25-25, Beretti rose to the occasion once again, hammering home her final kill of the evening to close out a 27-25 win and secure the 3-1 match victory.
Beretti was nothing short of sensational, delivering a career-best performance with 29 kills on 70 attempts, finishing with 32 total points. Setter
Elena Kasavica also turned in a career night, not only distributing the offense with 51 assists but also leading the back row with a career-high 28 digs.
Lilly Marth added 14 digs of her own to help steady the defense, while Pye-Blacknard chipped in 10 kills and three blocks.
Erin Matzke gave the Hawks a reliable presence in the middle with ten kills on 18 attempts for a .556 hitting percentage, as Quincy spread production across the floor.
As a team, Quincy posted 70 kills and hit .192 across the four sets while also collecting 94 digs, while the Greyhounds only totaled 49 kills with a .227 hitting percentage. However, the Greyhounds' 17 blocks are where they made their presence felt compared to just the Hawks' two.
With the victory, Quincy improved to 10-2 overall and 1-0 in GLVC play. The Hawks will be back on their home floor on Saturday, September 27, for a showdown against Lewis University, the GLVC preseason favorites. First serve is scheduled for 3:00 PM at Pepsi Arena.
