JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Quincy University football picked up its first GLVC win of the season on Saturday night, edging Lincoln University 24–21 in a tense back-and-forth battle at Dwight T. Reed Stadium. The Hawks (2-1, 1-0 GLVC) leaned on a career day from
Kamrin Cox, a stingy defense in crunch time, and special teams execution to seal the road victory.
The Hawks struck quickly in the opening quarter. Cox capped Quincy's first drive with a 4-yard rushing touchdown at the 11:01 mark to put the Hawks ahead 7–0. Later in the quarter, Cox showcased his versatility, hauling in a 29-yard touchdown pass from quarterback
Bradyn Little, extending the lead to 14–0.
Lincoln answered in the second quarter with back-to-back rushing scores to even the game at 14–14. Just before halftime, Quincy regained the lead when kicker
Kiko Moreno drilled a 43-yard field goal, sending the Hawks into the break up 17–14.
The Blue Tigers briefly grabbed their first lead in the third quarter, as Lincoln quarterback scrambled for a 15-yard touchdown to make it 21–17 Lincoln. But Quincy responded early in the fourth, mounting an 11-play, 75-yard drive capped by a 15-yard touchdown run from Cox, his third score of the night, to reclaim the lead at 24–21 with 14:52 to play. That proved to be the final difference, as Quincy's defense held strong down the stretch.
Cox delivered a career performance, finishing with 164 total yards and three touchdowns, including 60 yards rushing and 104 yards receiving on eight catches. Little was efficient under center, completing 20 of 25 passes for 207 yards and a touchdown. Running back
Aaron Harvey added balance with 67 rushing yards, while
Aaron Baker contributed five catches for 54 yards.
Defensively, the Hawks made plays when it mattered most.
Brock Wiley posted a career-high 11 tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack, while
Jacob Duke added a career-best 10 stops.
Caleb Aungst came up with his second interception in as many games, returning it 13 yards to halt a Lincoln drive late in the second quarter.
Special teams played a crucial role in the outcome.
Alex Schattin boomed four punts for an average of 48.2 yards, with three sailing past 50 yards to flip field position. Moreno was perfect on the night, hitting all three extra points and his 43-yard field goal just before halftime.
With the victory, Quincy improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play. The Hawks will now hit the road again to face Wayne State University on Saturday, September 27, at noon in Detroit, Michigan. The matchup will mark Quincy's final non-conference game of the season before resuming GLVC play.
