Hawks Sink their Talons into Braves on the Road

Box Score

Ottawa, KS – Following their break, the Hawks shook off any rust as they took on the Braves from Ottawa University today (Apr. 3). The Hawks dominated the matchup, securing a commanding 20-5 victory.

The Hawks came out firing, wasting no time in setting the tone. Mikenna Ham won the opening draw and quickly passed to her sister, Amelia Ham. The ball then found its way to Perrilynn Cory, who set up Emily Leal for the first goal of the game, sneaking it past the Braves' defense. This ignited a scoring frenzy—Alaina Wilkinson capitalized on a chased shot with a crease roll, followed by Anni Moran scoring off an assist from Amelia Ham. Aurora Jason joined the Ham assist party, netting a goal from the elbow less than 30 seconds later. Ottawa briefly interrupted Quincy's scoring run with a goal of their own, but Moran responded with a free-position shot that blazed into the back of the net. The Hawks dominated the first quarter, ending with an 8-1 lead.

Ottawa opened the second quarter with a goal, but Leal battled for the draw and got the ball to Wilkinson, who delivered a perfect pass from behind the cage to a cutting Jason, reinforcing Quincy's control of the game. A running clock was earned this quarter after MaryGrace Cummings drew a foul, putting her in prime position to score on a free-position shot. Leal also reached a milestone, surpassing 100 career draw controls—the second Hawk to do so this season. Ottawa managed to capitalize on a man-up opportunity, but Amelia Ham responded with a drive through all seven defenders to score, closing the half at 14-4.

The third quarter was once again all Hawks. After several minutes of testing new shots and plays, Amelia Ham found the net off a feed from Wilkinson. Ottawa answered with what would be their final goal of the game, bringing the score to 15-5. An eight-minute scoreless stretch was broken when Ham struck again at the end of the shot clock. Wilkinson capitalized on an Ottawa turnover to score the final goal of the quarter.

The fourth quarter followed a similar script. Ham kicked things off with another goal, bringing her game total to nine points. Moran added another goal off a feed from Leal at the top of the eight-meter arc, and Leal capped off the scoring with a final goal assisted by Jason from the elbow. Amelia Ham led in points, goals, and assists, finishing with 6 goals and 3 assists. Mikenna Ham led in ground balls with 6, draw controls with 7, and shared the team lead in caused turnovers with Leal (2 each). Madison Whiting Wagner recorded a 50% save percentage with five saves. Wilkinson also had a career day with a personal high in points with 6 and a high in assists with 3.

The battle is just beginning as the Hawks shift their focus to conference play. They take on the Missouri Western State University Griffons this Saturday (Apr. 5) at 12:00 P.M. CDT at Spratt Stadium in St. Joseph, MO.
