Second Half Surge Lifts Hawks over WJC for First Conference Victory

QUINCY, Ill. — The Quincy University men's lacrosse team closed out its 2025 season with a milestone victory on Saturday afternoon (April 26), defeating William Jewell College 8-7 at QU Stadium. The win not only capped off Senior Day on a high note, but also marked the program's first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference victory, and Head Coach Jacob Avevedo's first conference win at the helm of the program.

Quincy rallied from a three-goal deficit late in the third quarter, outscoring William Jewell 3-0 in the fourth to help secure the historic win.

The Hawks opened strong with three first-quarter goals. Eli Cowan struck first to tie the game 1-1 at 9:31, followed quickly by a goal from Haakon Steen off a Cowan assist. After a back-and-forth stretch, Caleb Hensley scored unassisted at 4:43 to give Quincy a 3-2 lead, though William Jewell would tie it by the end of the frame.

Jewell took control in the second, scoring twice to pull ahead 5-3 at halftime. Hensley kept Quincy within striking distance with his second goal at the 10:07 mark of the third, but the visitors answered with two more to make it 7-4. Before the end of the third, Mason Luoma found the back of the net on a man-up opportunity, finishing a setup from Cowan to trim the deficit to two entering the final quarter.

The fourth quarter belonged entirely to Quincy. Hensley completed his hat trick just over six minutes in to make it a one-goal game. Less than a minute later, Cowan tied it with an unassisted goal at 7:28, energizing the QU Stadium crowd. The game-winner came from senior Sean Usher, who fired home a shot with 5:33 left to put Quincy ahead for good.

In goal, Austin Vetter delivered another strong performance, finishing with 16 saves, including several critical stops down the stretch to preserve the lead.

Hensley led Quincy with three goals, while Cowan added two goals and two assists to captain the Hawks' offensive unit. Luoma, Steen, and Usher each chipped in a goal as the Hawks finished the season on an unforgettable high note.
