Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University women's lacrosse team broke its unbeaten conference streak on Thursday afternoon (Apr. 17) with a win over McKendree University. The Hawks saw an offensive burst in the second quarter, overhauling the Bearcats 13-12.
The Hawks offense started off patient, reading the Bearcats' defense for the first possession.
Alaina Wilkinson scored the Hawks first of the afternoon after a behind-the-goal run. McKendree responded with three goals in the first quarter, leaving the Hawks to a 3-1 deficit at the end of the first fifteen minutes.Â
Quincy used the break between quarters to regroup and came out with an eight-goal second quarter to take the lead over the Bearcats.
Amelia Ham dished
Anni Moran to start a three-goal, two minute period for the Hawks. Wilkinson notched her second goal of the game in that time, but Ham's solo shot following the draw control helped the Hawks to the lead.
Emily Leal made it 5-3 with a laser to the back of the net after the Hawks peppered the Bearcats' goalie.Â
Ham and Leal took advantage of back-to-back green cards for the Bearcats, each with woman-up goals in the run of play. Despite two late McKendree goals, Wilkinson and Leal both notched a goal to give the Hawks a three goal lead at the half.Â
The Bearcats came out with power in the second half with three shots in the first minute of play, the last shot saved by goalie
Madison Whiting Wagner. Ham found Moran again at the eight-minute mark before Ham found herself a goal in a two woman-up opportunity. Ham drew a free position shot a minute later and buried the ball low for her final goal of the day. Whiting Wagner made a key save following the Hawks' 12th goal on a free position attempt, but a quick grab on the rebound helped the Bearcats begin a three goal rally to end the third quarter. Wilkinson scored the Hawks final goal of the day in the third on another dish from Ham.Â
The Bearcats badgered the Hawks in the fourth quarter, scoring three goals in four minutes. The Hawks took eight shots in the fourth, but a strong goalie on the Bearcats side robbed the Hawks of a bigger win margin.Â
Whiting Wagner posted 10 saves on the day with four ground balls. Ham led thw Hawks with seven points on four goals, tying the Hawks' single season points record in the process.Â
The Hawks play their final game at The Rock on Saturday when they face #5 Maryville University at 12 p.m.
