Hawks Fall to Jennies in Final Midweek Doubleheader

Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University softball team had a tough go against the Jennies of the University of Central Missouri on Wednesday afternoon (Apr. 16). Despite a couple of hard knocks from Quincy, the Jennies' offense was stronger, beating the Hawks 7-1 and 16-2.

Game One
The Jennies found three runs in the first inning to put the Hawks under from the start. The Hawks got out of the inning on three fly balls and shut the Jennies down in the next four innings. During that time, Quincy had two great pick off plays on stolen bases, sending two Jennies back to the dugout.

Kenzie Moss gave the Hawks a chance and sent the ball deep down the right field line for her third triple of the year. Emma Stieferman helped get Moss across home with a hit to second. The Hawks tried again in the sixth inning with the same combination with a Moss right field triple, Stieferman up to bat. Good pitching from the Jennies kept the Hawks from another run and kept the game at the 7-1 score.

Kaelyn Conger threw six strikeouts on the day on 126 pitches.

Game Two
The second game of the doubleheader started in similar fashion to the first with a three-run first inning for the Jennies, however, this time the Hawks responded well with a run in the bottom of the inning. Jessie Martin started things off with a lead-off walk and advanced to third on Kinsey Biggerstaff's sacrifice bunt. Moss hit one hard to shortstop to bring in Martin, cutting the deficit 3-1.

Quincy's defense got into trouble in the second inning, giving up seven runs in the process. Quincy came close to closing the gap in the third inning, loading up the bases with two outs. A third-out strikeout sent the Hawks back out to the field without a run.

Martin had a hand in the Hawks final run of the day, sending a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Mykah Hurley from third base. The Jennies offense blossomed in game two, scoring 16 runs on ten hits.

Kaidence Dumas recorded the loss for the Hawks, pitching in the first inning. Stieferman led the bulk of the battery on the Jennies, pitching three innings and facing 19 batters. Alexus Freeman got the final out of the day to round out the Hawks pitching staff.

The Hawks look forward to a single road doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 18) against the Flyers of Lewis University.
