Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University softball program hosted Truman State University on Sunday afternoon (Mar. 23) for some GLVC action. The Bulldogs' defense only allowed four runs from the Hawks in 5-1 and 6-3 defeats.
Game One
Defense was the name of the game at the start of the doubleheader, both teams unable to get into scoring position. The Bulldogs were the first to get around with a home run over left field. The Bulldogs benefited from sacrifice fly balls in game one with three resulting in the Bulldogs' five runs in the game.
Quincy had a rough time getting on base against the conference's top defensive team at Mart Heinen Softball Complex and a top-ten pitcher in the circle. It took 10 batters for the Hawks to get on base,
Kinsey Biggerstaff breaking the streak on a hard-hit single off the pitcher's glove. Quincy was robbed of a few knocks into the outfield due to some exceptional diving plays from the Bulldogs.
Mykah Hurley had her own stellar play of the game, snatching a line drive and toss the ball from one knee over to first for the pick-off.
Quincy got into a rhythm in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring their only run of the game after Biggerstaff hit a sacrifice fly out to center field to bring in
Lindsey Fischer.
Jessie Martin tried to make something out of a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh with a single to centerfield, but strong pitching from the Bulldogs ended the inning.
Kaelyn Conger pitched all seven and struck out two batters.
Game Two
Kenzie Moss found a sweet spot in the bottom of the second inning and sent the ball over the wall for the Hawks first run of game two.
Alexus Freeman,
Casey Fronheiser, and Martin all got on base in the inning, but solid defense from Truman State kept the score at 1-0.
Quincy had another spurt of offensive in the third inning, kicked off by an
Isabella Shields's walk. Shields got to third and the Hawks loaded the bases just before the Bulldogs changed pitchers and got out of the inning on a force out at home and a baserunner interference. Truman State tied things up in the following inning.
The Bulldogs took their side of the scoreboard up to six runs in the top of the sixth inning on a triple, a sacrifice fly, and a double. Quincy's response was a two-run home run for freshman
Alexus Freeman, cutting the lead to just three runs. Quincy's defense kept it quiet in the top of the seventh and prepared for their last at-bat.
Allyson Maynard walked and
Ryleigh Jones took her place at first to pinch run. Moss singled, but Jones was out on Martin's hit to the left side on the force out. Freeman's single loaded the bases, but a short ball to second base from Hurley ended the game.
The Hawks take a trip to the western side of Missouri next weekend looking to face Southwest Baptist and Rockhurst on Saturday and Sunday.
