Kansas City, Mo. - The Quincy University softball team kicked off their weekend in Missouri early, moving their Sunday doubleheader against Rockhurst to Friday afternoon (Mar. 28) to combat anticipated storms. Despite decent offense from the QU Hawks, Rockhurst hit 25 balls into play, sweeping with 10-6 and 8-4 victories over Quincy.
Game One
Kinsey Biggerstaff was the first Hawk on base in Kansas City and went into scoring position after
Allyson Maynard's double to left center.
Kenzie Moss hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing in the freshman.
Jessie Martin followed Moss with another double, bringing in Maynard for the second run. After the Rockhurst Hawks had a go in the box, Quincy led 2-1 after the first inning.
Rockhurst took the lead on two multi-base hits in the second, but
Mykah Hurley was able to end the inning quickly with a line drive double play at third base. Rockhurst added a run with a sacrifice fly in the third to take a 5-2 lead on the Quincy Hawks.
Quincy added two runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Kinsey Biggerstaff sent the ball down the left field line bringing in a walked
Alexus Freeman and Hurley. Despite getting within range in the fourth, the Rockhurst Hawks extended their lead through the next two innings. Quincy added runs on another Biggerstaff single and a wild pitch in the final inning, but ultimately fell to the Rockhurst Hawks 10-6 in game one.
Kaelyn Conger began the battery for the Hawks and pitched four full innings, striking out two batters in the process.
Kaidence Dumas relieved Conger at the start of the fifth and struck out four batters in two innings.
Game Two
Quincy struggled to find its groove in game two, going under by eight runs in five innings. By the top of the sixth, the Quincy Hawks found some movement in the fifth inning with
Lindsey Fischer starting the train with a walk. Moss brought her on on a home run over left centerfield, giving the Hawks their first runs of the game. Maynard followed Moss with a home run of her own before Rockhurst changed pitchers and finished the inning.
The Hawks added their final tally of the day in the seventh inning, courtesy of an
Isabella Shields double to left field.
Alexus Freeman pitched the full six for the Hawks, her first appearance in the circle in a few weeks.
Despite decent hitting from the Hawks in both games--eight hits in game one and eight in game two--Quincy struggled to match the power and number Rockhurst shelled out on their home turf.
Quincy looks to bounce back on Saturday with games against the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University at 1 and 3 p.m.
