Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team ended their home slate on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 1) with a 79-69 win over the Greyhounds of the University of Indianapolis. The Hawks finished their regular season 11-3 in Pepsi Arena, and secured a third place slot heading into the conference tournament.
Cymirah Williams started the Hawks off with a tip-in layup in the Hawks' first possession. Though the teams traded off baskets, the Hawks boosted their lead courtesy of back-to-back three pointers from
Karsyn Stratton and
Nicole McDermott. Quincy kept a steady lead through the first quarter with one of their best offensive efforts as five Hawks notched five points in the opening quarter.
The second quarter lulled on both sides of the court, each team scoring just half of what they did in the first. Quincy had a three layup run to start and kept the Greyhounds off the board for over three minutes. Midway through the quarter, Quincy's defense blossomed.
Janiece Dawson and Stratton each took the ball away from the Greyhounds and went straight to the basket, taking the Hawks lead to double digits. Despite a slower offensive quarter from the Hawks, Quincy went 43 percent from the field and kept their lead to 11 points heading into the locker room.
Mikayla Huffine went two-for-two from the key to start the third quarter, and extended the Hawks' lead to 17 points to begin the second half. The Hawks shot 60 percent from the field in the third with Huffine and McDermott leading the pack at six points a piece. With a minute to go, McDermott drove the ball underneath the basket and mid-leap, faked a pass to the wing and threw the ball up from underneath the backboard for a layup that made a packed Pepsi Arena howl.
Quincy's efficiency continued through the final quarter, making half of the shots they took. This was the first quarter Indianapolis outscored the Hawks, though, taking advantage of the seven free throws and points on Hawks' turnovers.
Acheampomaa Danso created some excitement for the Hawks' last basket in Pepsi Arena this season, tipping in her own layup attempt.
Stratton finished her time in Pepsi Arena with her best shooting day, going 8-10 from the field, 2-3 from the key and scoring 19 points. McDermott posted 15 points and five assists in the Hawks win while Danso was the last Hawk to score in the doubles with 13. Danso and Williams led the pack in rebounds with nine and seven respectively.
Quincy will take on the Miners of Missouri S&T on Friday to kick off the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament. The Hawks will tip off at 8:15 in St. Charles, Missouri, on the campus of Lindenwood University. Tickets can be purchased
