QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's basketball team split its two-game season series against DU with a 72-90 loss to the Panthers at Pepsi Arena on Saturday, counteracting a 92-59 win at Drury back on 12/5.
El Sieger led the way for Quincy, pouring in a season-high 24 points with three strike from deep and a 9-10 performance at the foul line.
Jake Hamilton and
Logan Robbins also managed double figure scoring with 10 points for the former and 12 from the latter on 5-6 shooting with a team-leading 7 boards.
Drury put the Hawks in a tough spot from the opening tip, going on a 7-0 run early the game to build a 14-4 advantage four minutes into the game. Moments later at 18-8 Drury, QU formulated a 12-2 swing to even the tally 20-20 with just under 10 minutes to go in the half.
A pair of Sieger free throws and a
Joshua Bocher lay in found Quincy at the forefront 24-22 with 8:07 on the clock, but a 10-0 Drury run in response over the next two and a half minutes put the Panthers in control for the remainder of the frame, taking a 44-39 lead into the break after a last-second bucket from
Tiernan Stynes beat the buzzer to pull his side within striking distance.
Quincy was able to cut the deficit to a possession quickly into the second half on a pair of Robbins buckets to trail 54-52 before a Sieger layup brought the game back to a deadlock at 54-54.
A Hamilton layup in the next Hawks' possession tied it, once again at 56-56 with 12:46 to play before a Panthers three gave them the lead for good. QU hung with a couple of possessions for the next few minutes until a 15-2 DU run made it 75-60 with a little over five to play.
The Hawks were able to cut the lead back to single digits at 66-75 on a Robbins free throw with 3:30 remaining, but a 15-6 Panther run over the final stretch sealed the game for DU.
Drury outshot the Hawks 50.7% to 44.3% from the field while going a perfect 14-14 from the charity stripe while only committing eight turnovers and outscoring Quincy 50-38 in the paint.
