Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team hosted the Missouri S&T Miners on Thursday evening (Feb. 6) to begin their home stretch of conference play. Though the box score shows an evenly matched game, the Hawks' effort and opportunities from outside the key propelled them to a 76-61 victory, and their 11th straight win.
Quicny got started with a quick layup from
Nicole McDermott.
Mariann Blass capped a 7-0 run with her first of five three pointers in the evening. The Miners gave the Hawks plenty of space around the arc to shoot from, something Quincy has not seen much of since the beginning of the season. Missouri S&T allowed McDermott and Blass run free throughout the first half, combining for 29 of the 45 points on the court. Both teams were comparable in statistics at the end of the half with the defining factor in the 13-point deficit being the Hawks' seven scored three-pointers.
Quincy had their first third quarter lull in this latter half of the season. The Miners began to push the Hawks inside, forcing them to rely on the talents of senior
Cymirah Williams for pull-up jumpers in the lane. Williams led the Hawks with eight points in the third quarter.
Quincy's effort in the fourth quarter extended their lead. McDermott started the Hawks off with a layup Quincy forced the Miners into five turnovers, giving way to nine of the Hawks' 19 points. The Hawks also took care of the balls off the board, handling 13 rebounds in the fourth quarter alone.
McDermott led the Hawks with 21 points and seven rebounds while Blass was just behind at 17 points. Blass had a career night with a career-best five three pointers made, helping her hit 500 career points in her sophomore campaign. Williams led the Hawks with nine rebounds and was the last Hawk to score in the double digits with 14.
Quincy looks to keep the ball rolling on Saturday when it hosts Drury University at 1 p.m.
