Box Score AMERICUS, Ga. - The Hawks continued their two week trip of the south with a 3:00 PM showdown at Georgia Southwestern on Thursday (Feb. 20), falling to the host Hurricanes by a 14-5 final score.
The Hawks didn't take long to get into the scoring column as a
David Broughton double in the third AB of the game chased home
Matt Mateo to put Quincy on the board before a steal of third and a
JD Ortiz RBI groundout made it 2-0 after a half inning.
GSW responded with a big bottom half of the opening frame, plating five runs on a half dozen hits to press ahead 5-2.
QU answered with a run in the top of the second on a
Byron Blaise sac fly, prompting a trio of Hurricanes runs in the next half inning to press the deficit to 8-3. Georgia Southwestern tacked on another pair of runs in the home half of the fifth to make it 10-3.
A triple off the bat of
Jake Vitale drove home a run in the QU half of the sixth inning, tailed by another RBI for Blaise, this time on double to right center to narrow the margin to 10-5.
The GSW lineup refused to relent, firing back with a three-run bottom of the sixth, also adding another run in the home seventh to put the Hawks on the ropes down 14-5.
Neither side found the scoreboard in the final two innings as the Hawks went down in order in the eighth before loading the bases in the ninth, but weren't able to convert the opportunity into any runs.
