St. Louis, Mo. - For the first time since the 2011-12 season, the Hawks swept the regular season series against the University of Missouri-St. Louis and extended their win streak to thirteen games on Thursday night (Feb. 13). Quincy outscored the Tritons 23-10 in the fourth quarter to give the Hawks a gutsy 64-58 win on the road.
Both teams got off to a hot start, scoring buckets on their opening two possessions. It was back-and-forth action for the entirety of the first quarter with four ties and eight lead changes between the two squads. A three-pointer from
Taya Stevenson with a minute left in the quarter gave the Hawks an 18-16 lead heading into the second period.
A deep ball from the Tritons on their opening possession swung the lead back in favor of UMSL, but it did not last long after
Acheampomaa Danso scored back-to-back layups for her fourth and fifth field goals of the first half.
A pair of free throws from UMSL knocked the Quincy lead down to 22-21 at the eight-minute mark, which is when both teams went ice cold from the offensive end, as three and a half minutes passed before we saw our next bucket from either side. Despite shooting 4-15 in the quarter, the Hawks took a 28-26 lead heading into the break.
Nicole McDermott connected with a driving layup to kickstart the QU offense in the second half. The two teams continued the trend of the first half, trading buckets through the first five minutes of the third quarter. A right-handed layup in the lane from Ashlyn Arnsman regained the lead for Quincy at 37-35 with just under five to play.
The final minutes of the third belonged to the Tritons, as they proceeded to end the quarter on a 13-4 run, giving UMSL its largest lead of the game at 48-41.
The Hawks came out on a mission to begin the fourth quarter, exploding for eleven unanswered points through the first four and a half minutes to retake the lead at 52-48. UMSL scored its first bucket with a much-needed three, but McDermott quickly answered one possession later with her second three of the quarter. The three from McDermott was the beginning of another 8-0 run to give Quincy its largest lead at 60-51 with a little over three minutes to play.
UMSL crawled its way back to a five-point deficit, but the Hawks were able to execute at the free throw line, as Quincy walked away with a 64-58 victory for the team's thirteenth straight victory.
McDermott led the way offensively for the Hawks, scoring 17 points, with 15 of them coming in the second half.
Karsyn Stratton and Danso were the other two Hawks in double figures, each scoring ten points.
Cymirah Williams led the team with seven rebounds in a game that saw five Hawks with five or more rebounds, including Stratton, who hauled in six, surpassing 400 rebounds in her career between Kirkwood Community College and Quincy.
Quincy struggled offensively, shooting 39% from the field, 21% from deep, and 52% from the charity stripe. However, they limited the Tritons with their defense, forcing 19 turnovers and holding UMSL to 37% shooting.
The Hawks take their winning streak on the road to Jefferson City, Missouri, to take on Lincoln University of Missouri this upcoming Saturday (Feb. 15) as they look for a season sweep of the Blue Tigers.
