Donovan Claims 145 Silver Title; Five Hawks Place at Grand View Open

DES MOINES, Iowa. - Hawks freshman, Trinity Donovan turned in a perfect 5-0 performance on Saturday (Feb. 1) in the 145 silver division of the Grand View Open, using a fall, two techs and two decisions to claim first-place.

Joining Donovan on the podium for the Hawks was Mackenzie Graves (103 silver), Alexandra Tchekounova (117 silver), and Jasmine Hopkins (131 silver) with third-place finishes along with a fifth-place finish for Vianey Hernandez (103 silver).  

Donovan made the best of an opening round bye, handling Kaytlin McAnelly of Dickinson State by fall in round two action before dealing Zayla Vann of Life University a 10-0 tech fall defeat to move on to the quarterfinals. Another 10-0 tech fall win came for Donovan in the quarters, this time over Emily Angelo of Iowa Central CC.

Next was the closest bout of the day that saw Donovan nearly edge out Makena Schramm of Midland University by 10-8 decision to advance to the championship, which Donovan won by 9-2 decision over Ann Meiman of Jamestown for the 145 silver division crown. 

Tchekounova put up a 6-1 record on the day to reach her third-place finish in the 117 silver division. Starting with a pair of tech falls in the opening rounds over Valarie McAnelly of AATC (10-0) and Jade Hackett of Waldorf University (11-0) before suffering her only loss of the day in quarterfinal, a 5-2 decision to Jasmine Luedtke. 

A tech fall win over Nahim Arenas of Wayland Baptist (10-0) in the next match pitted Tchekounova against McAnelly for a second time, taking a 5-3 decision on this occasion to move on to the consolation semis where the Hawks' freshman bested Ella McNamee of Simpson by 6-2 decision to reach the third-place match. A minute and 20 seconds into her third-place match, Tchekounova pinned Larhae Whaley of Dickinson State to claim the win. 

After a first round bye, Hopkins took her next three matches by fall over Alanna Holly of Wayland Baptist, Kayla Nguyen of Texas Wesleyan and Hadley Boshart of Wartburg to reach the semifinal. 

Zoey Kessler of Baker dealt Hopkins her only loss of the day in the next match, an 11-0 tech fall before the Hawks' 131-pounder claimed her final two matches by forfeit over Alexandra Baudhuin of Iowa and Amaria Ridgner of Indian Hills for a third-place finish in the silver 131 division. 

Graves finished with five wins and a loss on her way to a third-place finish in the silver 103 division, opening with a win by fall over Kirsten Cortez of Carthage before dropping her only match of the day against Alycia Perez of Indian Hills by 8-2 decision in the quarters. 

Graves took her next two matches by fall over Jennifer Verdin of Dickinson State and Trinity Motter of Friends to reach the consolation semifinal against her teammate, Vianney Hernandez, whom she defeated with a 9-5 decision to reach the third place match. The Hawks' freshman defeated Kirsten Cortez of Carthage by fall once again to claim a third-place finish. 

Hernandez won her first two matches of silver 103 action by fall, defeating Jennifer Verdin of Dickinson State and Grace Conner of York before dropping her semifinal match to Chasey Karabell of Indian Hills by tech fall.

Next was a 9-5 decision loss to teammate Mackenzie Graves in the consolation semifinal before Hernadez claimed the fifth-place match by forfeit over Alycia Perez of Indian Hills. 

Next Up 

The Hawks are back in action on Wednesday evening (Feb. 5), hosting the Lions of Lindenwood University for a 6:00 PM dual at Pepsi Arena in the team's first and only home contest of the season.
