Hawks Serve Their Way to Sixth Straight Win, Down Truman in Four

QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team continued its strong late-season push on Friday night inside Pepsi Arena, defeating Truman State in four sets (25-17, 25-12, 23-25, 25-14) to extend its win streak to six straight matches. The victory also marks Quincy's 11th consecutive win over the Bulldogs, dating back to 2019.

The Hawks were relentless from the service line, causing disruption to Truman's serve receive patterns and dictating tempo throughout the match. Quincy recorded 12 service aces, marking the fourth match this season with double-digit aces.

Quincy set the tone early in the opening set, jumping out to a 7-4 lead behind a four-point run that included back-to-back kills from Janelle Pye-Blacknard, followed by back-to-back service aces from Selin Turgut. Setter Elena Kasavica distributed the ball with pace and balance throughout the first frame, allowing multiple attackers to find success in rhythm. With the Hawks holding a 24-17 advantage, Zeynep Cetin finished the set with a clean swing to secure a 25-17 win. The Hawks were nearly flawless offensively in the opening frame, hitting .467 with 15 kills and just one error.

The strong start carried directly into set two, as Quincy once again built an early advantage with back-to-back kills from Susanna Beretti and an ace from Lilly Marth to make it 7-2. Truman briefly steadied at 11-8, but the Hawks responded with a decisive 10-0 run fueled by six kills and another ace, effectively putting the set out of reach. Erin Matzke delivered the final point with a powerful finish to close the set 25-12. Quincy hit .412 in the set and limited the Bulldogs to only six kills at a .091 hitting percentage.

Set three opened much the same, with Quincy taking another early lead, including two more early kills from Beretti to go up 5-1. However, a series of mid-set errors shifted momentum, allowing Truman to claw back and eventually pull ahead. Quincy regained composure late, rallying behind Pye-Blacknard and another timely ace from Marth to tie the set, but Truman responded with two late kills to take the frame 25-23. It was Truman's strongest offensive set of the night, hitting .286, while the Hawks hit .233, which was their low for the match.

Quincy responded with poise in the fourth set, refusing to allow momentum to carry over. The Hawks scored seven of the first ten points and used a dominant five-point run highlighted by a solo block from Kasavica and two more kills from Beretti to extend the lead to 12-5. From there, Quincy controlled tempo and defensive structure, closing the match with a 25-14 win. The Hawks hit a match-best .469 in the final set with 19 kills, while holding Truman to single-digit kills for the second time in the match.

The Hawks controlled the match statistically from start to finish, outscoring Truman 83-51 and holding clear advantages in kills (66-41), serve pressure, and defensive balance. Quincy finished the night hitting .381 as a team, the third-highest hitting percentage recorded this season, while Truman was limited to a .215 mark.

No player stood out more than Beretti, who delivered one of her most complete performances of the season. Beretti finished with 24 kills on .512 hitting, marking her second straight match with 20+ kills and her third match this year hitting over .500, while also adding 17 digs and two service aces to impact all phases of play.

Cetin finished the night hitting .571 with eight kills and two blocks, and Matzke added 12 kills as she surpassed 600 career points. Pye-Blacknard reached two career milestones in the win, surpassing 400 career kills and 900 career digs, finishing with 14 kills and seven digs. Marth anchored the defense with a match-high 19 digs to go along with three service aces, while Kasavica controlled the offense efficiently with 53 assists and 10 digs, marking her third match this season with at least 50 assists.

The Hawks will return to Pepsi Arena on Sunday for their final regular-season home match as they host Upper Iowa. Quincy has won three straight matches against the Peacocks and will look to extend both the series streak and their current six-match win streak. Prior to first serve, Quincy will honor five seniors, Janelle Pye-Blacknard, Alice Pavan, Zeynep Cetin, Bre Banks, and Pinar Dugeroglu, for their commitment and impact on the program.
