HAMMOND, Ind. - Quincy volleyball responded in a big way Friday evening, sweeping Northern Michigan in straight sets, 25–19, 25–12, 25–22, to close out day one of the Midwest Region Crossover at the Hammond Sportsplex. After a tough opening loss earlier in the day, the Hawks controlled the match from start to finish to improve to 14–5 on the season.
Quincy found its rhythm early, stringing together a balanced attack from the pins and the middle. A pair of kills from
Susanna Beretti helped spark momentum midway through the frame, and a late service ace from
Elena Kasavica gave the Hawks separation. Beretti and
Janelle Pye-Blacknard combined to close the set as Quincy took the opener, 25–19.
The Hawks dominated the second set with one of their most complete performances of the season. Kasavica fueled a blistering 6–0 start with two service aces and multiple assists that set up Beretti and
Zeynep Cetin for kills. Quincy never looked back, adding more aces from
Lilly Marth and Pye-Blacknard, while the block came alive to stall Northern Michigan's offense. The Hawks hit .290 in the frame and rolled to a commanding 25–12 win.
Northern Michigan pushed back in the third, trading points with the Hawks throughout the set. Quincy leaned on Beretti in crunch time, as she delivered multiple kills to hold off the Wildcats. After leading narrowly down the stretch, the Hawks finished strong to claim the set, 25–22, and complete the sweep.
Quincy turned in one of its sharpest statistical efforts of the season, hitting .294 as a team with 42 kills while limiting Northern Michigan to just a .129 hitting percentage. The Hawks were especially effective at the net, recording 10 blocks, their second-highest total of the year, and also served aggressively with 10 aces, marking the third time this season they've reached double digits from the service line.
Individually, Beretti was the star of the night with a match-high 19 kills on 49 swings, hitting .327 while adding seven digs and four block assists for 22.0 points. Pye-Blacknard was equally impactful, finishing with 11 kills, a .333 hitting percentage, nine digs, and three block assists. Cetin was efficient with five kills on nine attempts while contributing five block assists, and Kasavica orchestrated the offense with 35 assists and five service aces to go along with five digs. Marth steadied the back row with seven digs and an ace, while
Erin Matzke and the QU block unit combined to slow down Northern Michigan's attack.
The Hawks will be back in action tomorrow for their final match of the Midwest Region Crossover, taking on Cedarville University at 2:00 PM on court 5.
