QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks had a tough task on Saturday (Jan. 18), hosting one of the GLVC's best in the Peacocks of Upper Iowa for an afternoon, conference showdown in Pepsi Arena.
QU out-scored UIU by six in the final 20 minutes, but weren't able to overcome a 16-point deficit built by the high-powered Peacocks offense in the first half, dropping the contest by an 88-78 final score.
Camren Kincaid kicked off the scoring for Quincy, knotting up the game at 2-2 with a layup before a
Jake Hamilton jumper gave the Hawks their first lead of the contest shortly after at the 17:37 mark.
Neither side was able to create much of an advantage during the opening stages of the game as the first 10 minutes were played within two possessions until Upper Iowa went on a run up 21-18, scoring eight straight to press the edge to 29-18 at the 6:57 mark.
Shortly after at 35-22, a seven point QU swing on a bucket and three from
Max Booher as well as a Kincaid layup narrowed the margin to six points before the Peacocks closed out the half on a 9-2 run to take a 47-31 advantage into the break.
Quincy was unable to break through for the first 12 minutes of the second half, trailing 76-60 with 8:01 on the clock until a
Logan Robbins layup sparked a 13-3 QU run that also featured a Booher three and eight straight points from
Joshua Bocher to move back within striking distance at 79-73 with 3:04 remaining.
The Hawks weren't able to edge any closer, using an
Ethyn Brown jumper moments later to trim the lead to 81-75 with 2:25 before the Peacocks went on to take the game 88-78.
Five Hawks scored in double figures; led by Booher and Sieger with 15 points each, followed by 14 from Hamilton, 11 and a team-leading seven assists for Brown and 10 points with a team-pacing six boards for Bocher.
Despite a height disadvantage against the formidable UIU frontcourt, Quincy outscored Upper Iowa in the paint 48-36, but suffered a rare 44-34 loss in the rebounding margin.
