Quincy, Ill. - There were standout performances all across Jack Mackenzie Field Sunday afternoon (Sept. 15) as the Quincy University women's soccer team earned their first victory of the season over the Lewis Flyers. Three goals, and 12 saves from senior
Julia Mincher gave the Hawks a leg-up in their Great Lakes Valley Conference run.
Mincher was tested early on as the Flyers took residence in the Hawk's defending third for the first ten minutes of the game. Sixteen minutes in,
Reegan Hess ran the ball up the left side of the field and slotted the ball across to junior
Ella Wolfard for the Hawks' first goal of the game.
A free kick just outside the Quincy penalty box seemed promising for the Flyers until Mincher flew across the goal and kept the dipping strike out of the net. The Flyers capitalized on a corner kick late in the half, putting the teams tied after 45 minutes of play.
Olivia Nelson scored her first Quincy goal five minutes into the second half. Hess found Nelson just outside the box, and Nelson sent it low past the keeper giving the Hawks a lead.
Mincher had three saves in three minutes after Nelson's goal, including a last second pop over the crossbar.
Daniella Segall sealed the deal for the Hawks on another beautiful upper-90 shot from outside the box, in similar fashion to her lone goal against Bemidji State Friday night.
Mincher finished the day with 12 saves, a career high.
The Hawks will return for another home weekend, starting on September 20th when they face the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds at 5 p.m.
