LEBANON, Ill. - The Quincy University men's basketball team looked to break its recent cold-spell with a Thursday evening (Feb. 9) game against the Bearcats of McKendree in enemy territory. The Hawks were unsuccessful in sweeping the season series with MCK after soundly thumping the Bearcats back on 12/9 by an 80-63 score, Quincy fell in this contest 77-68 despite a 26 point effort from
Zion Richardson.
Quincy played the catch-up game after a slow start that saw the Hawks trailing 8-0 a little over a minute into the contest. After a long grind for the next 15 minutes, QU finally broke through with its first lead of the contest at the 3:15 mark on a layup from
Todd Bieg to make it 26-25. MCK went on a 7-2 run to close out the first half with a narrow 35-31 advantage. Quincy out-shot the Bearcats 46% to 44% in the first half.
A little under three minutes into the second half a three-ball from
Isaiah Foster for three of his 14 in the contest put QU at the forefront 40-38. Quincy led by as many as four for a brief stretch before MCK regained the advantage 45-44, followed by nearly three minutes of cold shooting and turnovers for both sides.
A pair of free throws from
Orlando Thomas and a layup from
Nate Shockey put the Hawks ahead 48-45 before a 12-0 run from the Bearcats gave them a lead they'd never return.
Quincy chopped a nine-point deficit down to just two with four minutes and change on a jumper from
John Kelly III, but it was pretty much all McKendree from there as they shot 50% from the field as a team (13-26) in the second half, propelling the Bearcats to the 77-68 winner.
With the 26 point outburst, Richardson moves into the top three scorers in the league at the time of this writing, averaging over 17.8 per contest.
Next up for the Hawks is a trip back down to the St. Louis area for a showdown with the Tritons of University of Missouri-St. Louis. QU looks to avenge a 66-75 loss to UMSL earlier this season on 12/7 in the Saturday (Feb. 10) contest that is slated to tip-off at 3:00 PM from the Mark Twain Building.
