Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team hosted Lewis University on Saturday (Feb. 17) for their Play4Kay Pink Out game. Despite the first half push and a lively crowd, the Hawks fell to the Flyers 76-70.
The Hawks started the game going 5 for 8 from behind the arc, the best start Quincy has had all season. Five players added to the 25-point first quarter and kept the top-seeded Flyers at bay.
Janiece Dawson had herself a first quarter with two well-celebrated threes.
The second quarter was dominated by top-scorer
Acheampomaa Danso who scored two layups and an extra free throw. The Hawks found success at mid-distance and second-chance shots. Quincy led by one possession heading into the second half.
Despite a quick basket from Lewis at the top of the third quarter, the Hawks held on and kept the crowd entertained with some high-scoring basketball. The Flyers finally found their groove in the later half of the third, scoring two bonus free throws to tie the game up at the end of the quarter.
The Hawks trailed off in the final quarter, with Lewis' first attempted shot giving the Flyers the lead for good. The Hawks chased each made basket for the Flyers with one of their own, but it was not enough to regain the lead and take the win.
Acheampomaa Danso was the leading scorer again this evening with 15 points and 8 rebounds.
Mikayla Huffine,
Cymirah Williams and Dawson all had points in the double digits while Huffine led the team in assists.
The Hawks look to make something out of their last road trip to Fayette, Iowa, next Thursday against the Upper Iowa Peacocks.
