Dominant Second Half Propels Hawks over Lewis

QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks played host to the Flyers of Lewis University in their penultimate home game of the season on Saturday (Feb. 17) for Pink Out night. The Hawks delivered an 82-69 victory lead by a 25-point effort from Zion Richardson to put a bow on the QU Athletics Hall of Fame Induction of former Hawks hooper, Tom Lepper.

Quincy scored the first point of the contest on a free throw from Richardson and built up an early 8-4 advantage following the first media timeout. The next ten minutes were not kind to the Hawks as Lewis got the offense cooking, pulling ahead by as many as 15  with a little under six minutes to play.

QU knocked down the advantage to single digits by halftime using a six-point run from Jake Hamilton and some free throws from Mason Wujek and John Kelly III to trail 38-29 at the break.

A three from LU a little over a minute into to second half pushed the lead back to 10 before the Hawks went on a 17-0 run capped off by a three from Richardson to lead it 50-43, holding the Flyers scoreless for over six minutes during the stretch.

Lewis cut the lead back to two a couple of minutes later but never came any closer as it was all Quincy from there, pressing the advantage to as many as 14 and scoring the highest point total in a half for the 2024 campaign (53) in a dominant final frame of play for the 82-69 winner.

Four Hawks scored in double figures, lead by Richardson's 25, followed by a career-high 14 from Hamilton. Kelly added 11 along with 10 from Wujek.

Quincy shot 50% from the field as a team in the second half, connecting on 16-32 and 5-12 from beyond the arch. Richardson and Hamilton spearheaded the attack from distance, both knocking down three from beyond the arch.

Next Up

The Hawks are on the road for their next game, making the trip to Fayette, IA for a matchup with the Peacocks of Upper Iowa on Thursday (Feb. 22). Tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM from Dorman Memorial Gymnasium as QU looks to avenge an 84-88 defeat to the Peacocks in Pepsi Arena on 1/13.
