Hawks Overtake Rockhurst Hawks

Quincy, Ill. - Pepsi Arena was packed for the Hawk on Hawk battle between the Quincy Unversity Hawks and the Rockhurst University Hawks on Thursday night (Feb. 1). Quincy kept Rockhurst nearly fifteen points under their scoring average per game, winning the game 62-55.

The Quincy Hawks fell behind in the first quarter, scoring less than a third of their shots taken. Quincy finished out the first half just one point behind Rockhurst, improving on their shooting slightly and beginning to slowly shut down the Rockhurst Hawks.

Both Hawks teams fought for the lead in the third quarter with eight lead changes. The Quincy Hawks gained some energy from the packed crowd during the fourth quarter to change the fate of the game for good. Two shots in the paint from Acheampomaa Danso and a layup from Cymirah Williams tied the game up one last time before Taya Stevenson's free throws put the Quincy Hawks on top for the remainder of the game. Stevenson sealed the deal with under 40 seconds to go with a deep three pointer, putting the Quincy Hawks two full possessions ahead of the Rockhurst Hawks.

Stevenson's three pointer and Williams' 16 points and 18 rebounds gave the Hawks a much needed win with the conference tournament beginning in a month. Williams recorded her 8th double-double of the season, and according to the statistics updated at 9am Thursday morning, she ranks top-20 in the nation for double-doubles in the season. Her career-high 18 rebounds puts her fourth in the program record book.

Two other Hawks scored in the doubles today--Danso and Mariann Blass--each scoring ten points.

The Hawks look to continue the momentum this Saturday when they take on William Jewell at Pepsi Arena.
