Rolla, Mo. - The Hawks concluded a long week of road contests with a tough test at Missouri S&T on Saturday afternoon (Dec. 7), facing off against a very hot Miners squad to close opening week of conference play.
After delivering a convincing victory over Drury on Thursday evening (Dec. 5), QU was unable to keep up the pace against the GLVC's only remaining undefeated team, as S&T used a big first half to deal Quincy a 72-55 defeat on the road.
An
Ethyn Brown layup opened up the scoring as a slow start for both sides found the score at 4-2 in favor the Miners at the 16 minute media timeout. Over the next three minutes, a 10-1 S&T run pressed the advantage to double digits.
El Sieger poured in nine straight Hawks' points over the next four minutes, cutting the deficit to as little as six points and ending his scoring run with a pair of free throws to find his side trailing 22-12. The Miners closed out the half on a 20-11 run to take a 42-23 lead into the break.
Quincy came out firing to open the second half, going on a 15-2 run over the first six minutes and change to trim the S&T advantage to just six at 44-38 on three buckets from Brown, along with a pair of scores for both
Camren Kincaid and
Jake Hamilton.
The final 13 minutes of the contest saw the Miners nearly rebuild their edge from the first half. Despite being held to just 33.33% shooting as a team in the frame, S&T used a 13-16 effort from the charity stripe down the stretch to keep QU at bay.
The Hawks couldn't get much going in the shooting department, managing 30.8% from the field and 18.2% from beyond the arc while holding the Miners to 43.9% and 35.3%.
Brown led Quincy in scoring, putting up 16 points on 7-12 shooting with two strikes from deep. Sieger and Kincaid also reached double figures, scoring 13 and 10, respectively.
Logan Robbins was the top QU rebounder, pulling down nine boards, followed by eight from
Mason Wujek.
