Quincy, Ill. - The Hawks were at home once again Sunday afternoon (Dec. 15) as they took on the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State University for the final game of the Hansen-Spear Holiday Classic.
Quincy continued its hot shooting from the night before, opening its first offensive possession with a three from
Max Booher, and the Hawks never trailed after that. Booher went on to hit two more three's in the half, including one at the 7:49 mark giving the Hawks a 30-12 lead, their largest of the game.
Saginaw Valley worked the first-half deficit down to eleven, but a set play from Coach
Brad Hoyt put
Jake Hamilton in great position for an easy two down low, before Booher would end his big first half with a contested pull-up jumper to beat the buzzer, giving Quincy a 39-24 lead going into halftime.
Quincy struck first in the second half with a jumper from Hamilton as both teams battled back and forth in the final 20 minutes. The Cardinals were able to cut the lead down to single digits at the 11:12 mark, but the Hawks did not break, keeping a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half.
It was a foul-heavy second frame as both teams combined for 34 free throws, the Cardinals shooting 13-15 and the Hawks shooting 15-19.
El Sieger led Quincy at the line, shooting a perfect 7-7. SVSU trimmed the QU lead down to eight with under three minutes to go, but successful trips to the line and a second-chance layup from
Logan Robbins delivered the Hawks a gritty 82-70 victory.
The Hawks scored 80+ for the third time in the last four games, which was done by committee, once again. Four Hawks managed to get their way into double figures. Booher led the way with 18 points, and Sieger added another 17 off the bench, which was his eighth game scoring more than 10. Hamilton shot an efficient 6-10 from the field to get his total up to 16, and
Mason Wujek scrapped for 10 in his 24 minutes played.
Camren Kincaid sneakily almost had a triple-double for Quincy. Kincaid came away with 8 points, had a team-high 8 rebounds, and was a floor general piling up a season-high 8 assists for the Hawks.
As a team, the Hawks shot over 50% from the field for the second straight game, a solid 38.9% from three, and hit a season-high 21 total free throws on 26 attempts.
