Cedarville, Ohio - The Hawks turn a new leaf on the 2024-25 season with an opening win over the Ursuline College Arrows in the GLVC/GMAC Crossover on Friday night (Nov. 8), their first season opener win since 2015. Consistent shooting from Quincy throughout gave way to the 71-69 Hawks victory.
Quincy started a similar five to last year, now with the addition of graduate transfer
Nicole McDermott who led the Hawks with 18 points and seven rebounds. The Hawks outshot the Arrows in the first quarter, going 36 percent from the field.
Mariann Blass came out of the gates with nine points in the opening ten minutes with two three-point buckets.Â
The Arrows cut the score in half in the second quarter and continued to inch closer to the Hawks as the game wore on. Ursuline continued to improve its shooting percentage, but it was the Hawks' defense that denied them from the win. Quincy forced the Arrows to turning the ball over fifteen times and and scored 17 points from the changes in possession.Â
The game became close in the final five minutes of play when the Arrows sank two jumpers in the paint to take the lead. Both teams exchanged free throws, but it was Blass's fourth three pointer of the game that tied things back up for the Hawks. The Hawks dominated the final minute of the game, scoring six points to finish their first contest of the season on top.Â
McDermott and Blass combined for half of the Hawks points this evening with nearly half of those points coming from outside the key.
Cymirah Williams performed well under the basket, picking up nine rebounds and scoring a couple second-chance shots.Â
The Hawks look to keep the momentum going with their second and final game of the weekend tomorrow against the host school Cedarville University. Tip-off will begin at 2:15 p.m. CDT.Â
