Box Score Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University football team beat the William Jewell College Cardinals in the Battle of the Birds on Saturday (Nov. 2). A second quarter surge and some great defense at the end kept the Hawks afloat in the 24-20 victory.
The Cardinals were the first to change the zero on the scoreboard with a 36-yard field goal.
Teon Dollard scored his first of three touchdowns at the start of the second quarter after rushing 34 of the 65 yards in the drive. His one yard leap into the end zone put the Hawks ahead.
William Jewell got a touchdown of their own before the end of the half after starting their drive on an interception.
The Hawks worked their way into the red zone on the next drive and looked to at least tie the game up before half with a 30-yard field goal by
Michael Owens. A long run from quarterback
Drake Davis put the Hawks in perfect position for another score within two minutes of halftime. Dollard, again, ran the ball the remaining 11 yards to the end zone to put the Hawks up 17-10 before half time.
The Cardinals tied up the game once again in the third quarter with another touchdown. Dollard sealed the deal for the Hawks with a 44-yard run into the house.
William Jewell had a chance to make trouble for the Hawks late in the game when a deep pass just three yards from the end zone was denied by
Joseph Webb. The Cardinals challenged the incomplete pass call and after further investigation, the call stood, giving the Hawks the final drive of the game and keeping the Cardinals out of the end zone.
Dollard went for 162 yards in his final game at The Rock with three touchdowns.
David Lewis led the Hawks with seven tackles (five solo) with Webb behind him at six tackles (five solo).
Garrett Drew and
Anthony Gilpin Jr. led the Hawks each with three receptions for 58 total yards.
The Hawks celebrated 28 seniors on senior day including four student assistants and managers. The Hawks close out GLVC play next weekend in Bolivar against Southwest Baptist University.
