Hawks Fall on the Road to SBU

BOLIVAR, Mo. - The Quincy University men's basketball team took on the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist for a road GLVC test on Saturday (Jan. 27). The Hawks looked to snag a sweep of this weeks contests after a win over Drury on Thursday evening (Jan. 25). QU led 28-23 at the half, but a 9-0 run from SBU around the nine minute mark of the second half put the Bearcats ahead for good in a narrow 65-62 loss.

In similar fashion to the Drury game Quincy got out to a fast start, getting a jumper and a three from John Kelly III and a jumper from Nate Shockey to lead 7-0 heading to the first media timeout.

The Hawks maintained the advantage for the remainder of the first half, fending off multiple Bearcat runs and even pressing the lead to as many as 11 on a three from Orlando Thomas to make it 26-15 with 5:17 to play in the first.

Southwest Baptist narrowed the margin down to five by halftime to give QU a 28-23 edge heading to the locker room.

Isaiah Foster scored the first five points of the second half for Quincy to keep his side ahead 33-29 at the first media timeout. Shortly after a pair of free throws for John Kelly III gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the half 35-29 with 15:54 to play.

QU clung to a small lead for the next seven minutes until SBU broke through with a three-pointer at the 8:49 mark to take a 44-42 advantage.

Quincy drew within a point on multiple occasions down the stretch, including with 4 seconds remaining on a three from Shockey to trail 63-62.

Following a pair of successful free throws from the Bearcats, QU had a fighting chance to tie the game, but weren't able to connect on the full-court pass for the final shot, dropping the contest 65-62.

Mason Wujek led the Hawks in scoring, dropping in 14 on 5-7 shooting. Joining Wujek in double figures was Foster with 13 and Kelly with 11.

Zion Richardson pulled down 15 boards to spearhead the rebounding effort . The guard grabbed nearly half of his teams 34 rebounds, out-rebounding all players in the contest by eight and all on his team by 12.

The Hawks weren't able to build on the great three-point shooting performance against Drury that saw them shoot nearly 60% from deep. Against the Bearcats, QU converted beyond the arch at 27% while SBU managed a 50% mark.

Next up for Quincy is a Thursday (Feb. 1) date with the Hawks of Rockhurst University in Pepsi Arena. Tip-off for contest is slated for 7:30 pm.
