QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's basketball team entered Thursday night (Feb. 1) looking to avenge their 66-80 loss against the Rockhurst University Hawks on January 6th. QU fell to 10-10 (.500) on the season by a final score of 79-100.
The Hawks double-digit scorers were
Zion Richardson with 33 and
Nate Shockey with 17 points. Richardson's 33 marked a career-high as well as the highest scoring outburst for the team dating back to the 2020 season where Tanner Stuckman, who now plays professionally in Spain, dropped 35 points on Illinois-Springfield on 11/27.
QU got off to a hot start from three, getting two from Richardson and one from Shockey to go into the first media timeout leading 9-6.
Quincy was able to stretch their lead to as much as eight in the first half, but ultimately went into halftime with a 45-41 lead.
Both teams dealt with four trouble in the first half combining for 25 fouls and 34 free throw attempts, this forced Quincy to play 12 different players in the first half. QU survived the foul problems with boosts from Richardson and
Orlando Thomas. Richardson had 23 points at the break, while Thomas came away with 4 steals to give the Hawks defense a boost.
RU upped the pressure in the second half, going on a 14-4 run to build a 55-49 lead within the first four minutes thanks to five QU turnovers and a flurry of four threes.
Rockhurst would never relinquish the lead, outscoring Quincy 59-34 in the second half thanks in large part to opening the half 10-14 from three as a team.
QU had a solid shooting night as a team going 26-55 (47.3%) from the floor and 11-26 (42.3%) from three. QU also had 18 turnovers which led to 19 Rockhurst points.
Quincy University's next matchup will be Saturday (Feb. 3) at Pepsi Arena where the Hawks will take on the Cardinals of William Jewell with tip-off set for 3:00 PM.
