Williams' 22-Point Game not Enough in Loss to Peacocks

Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball program came down from their high win over Truman State Thursday after dropping a game to Upper Iowa on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 13). Despite high performances from Cymirah Williams and Mariann Blass, the Hawks could not overtake the Peacocks and fell 69-62.

The Hawks went down quickly in the first quarter, leaving the long-range shots open to the GLVC's leading three point scoring team. The Peacocks scored six of nine from beyond the arc, putting the Hawks down ten in the first quarter.

Things turned around for Quincy in the second quarter, with the Hawks making both of their first shots attempted. The second quarter was the only time the Hawks were over fifty percent on shots and outscored the Peacocks by four.

The Hawks kept pace in the third quarter, putting the Peacocks under high pressure on many inbounds. After Blass shot two free throws, the Hawks stunned the Peacocks with the pressure, enough for junior Taya Stevenson to steal the ball and draw an offensive foul after losing possession. Shortly after that, the Hawks kept their defensive line high and forced Upper Iowa into a travel violation, giving the Hawks an opportunity to go back to their own net.

Williams brought the Hawks within one point after she recovered a block and converted it to points with a layup halfway through the final quarter. Things were promising for the Hawks as both they and the Peacocks went basket for basket. Quick shots and drawn fouls made the difference in today's match, leaving Quincy with another loss on the season.

Cymirah Williams led the team with 22 points, giving her 37 points on the weekend. Mariann Blass trailed Williams with 16 points, the only other Hawk to score in the double digits.

The Hawks hit the road next weekend for a lone game on Saturday against Illinois Springfield.
