Box Score KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Quincy University baseball team held on to win their final regular season contest, fending off the Hawks of Rockhurst University 11-9 for their 40
th win of the season.
Two one-out errors in the top of the first put the Hawks in business to open the game. A single from
Lance Logsdon loaded the bases for a three RBI triple from
Austin Simpson.
Zach Parks ripped a single through the right side to for another run in the next at-bat to put QU ahead 4-0 after the first half inning.
Rockhurst answered with three one-out singles and a sacrifice fly to cut the deficit in half at 4-2 after the first frame.
Doubles from
Gino D'Alessio and
Luke Napleton plated another run in the top of the second. Up 5-2, starting pitcher
Jay Hammel settled in after a rocky first inning with two strikeouts and a groundout.
A single from Simpson along with an HBP for
Cole Erickson put a runner on second base for an RBI single from
Brock Boynton to press the lead further to 6-2 in the third.
The Hawks batted around in the fourth inning, loading the bases and scoring four more runs on just two hits. A double from Dupont followed along with a walk for Logsdon and a HBP for
Nolan Wosman loaded the base with one down. Another strikeout followed by a RBI walk for Parks, a run scoring dropped-third-strike and another RBI walk from Boynton made it 9-2. D'Alessio ended the scoring with a RBI single to left blowing the game wide open 10-2.
Quincy used five different bullpen arms to close out the contest.
Nolan Roseman was the first, coming on in relief of Hammel for the bottom of the fifth after a leadoff walk. The senior lefthander worked a scoreless frame also collecting a strikeout.
Eli Ecton struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth for his inning of work while surrendering an unearned run in the process to pull Rockhurst a run closer at 10-3.
QU plated their final run of the game in the top of the seventh inning. D'Alessio led off with a single to right, followed by another single from Dupont. Both runners attempted to advance on a wild pitch, Dupont being unsuccessful getting gunned down at second. A groundout to the left side from Napleton drove in the run to make it 11-3 midway through the seventh.
RU pushed across two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and four in the ninth to make things interesting, but Quincy cut the comeback rally short, securing an 11-9 win.
The Hawks end their season at 40-9 and 27-5 in conference play. They enter the GLVC tournament next week with the best record in the conference as well as their first 40 win season since 2018.
