QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University men's basketball team opened up the 2023 Hansen-Spear Classic with a match-up against the Phantoms of East-West University. Quincy got scoring from all 13 players in the lineup, led by
Jamil Wilson with 15 in an 84-52 victory to move to 4-1 on the home hardwood.
The Phantoms scored eight of the first 10 points to lead in the early stages of the contest, but a 9-0 QU run capped by a couple free throws from
Todd Bieg put the Hawks ahead 11-8.
EWU came back to knot the score at 12-12 just before the 12 minute media timeout, but a layup from
Ibrahim Drame put Quincy ahead 14-12.
Shortly after, QU pushed the advantage to double digits and took a 39-21 lead into the halftime break.
The Hawks didn't allow a basket for the first four and a half minutes of the second frame, going on a 12-0 run to put the contest away early, leading by a 51-21 score. QU led by as many as 37 in the second half but finished with an 84-52 winner over East-West.
Over half of the Hawks shots found the bottom of the net, shooting 50.7% (36-71) while out-shooting their opponents by almost 20%, holding the Phantoms to 32.8% (21-64).
Nearly three quarters of the Quincy points came from inside the paint, cashing in on 62 of its 84 total points from in the painted area. In addition, a +14 mark in the rebounding margin featuring 16 offensive boards paved the way for 21 second chance points as the Hawks got busy around the bucket all night.
Wilson poured in more points than he had minutes on the court, shooting 7-8 from the field for 15 points in 14 minutes. Joining Wilson in double figures was Drame with 12 and
Isaiah Foster with 10.
John Kelly III led the rebounding effort with 9 followed by
Mason Wujek with 7 boards.
Next up for Quincy is a Saturday (Dec. 16) showdown with the Warriors of Wayne State University to close out the Hansen-Spear Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM from Pepsi Arena.
