QUINCY, Ill. - In their first home duel of the season, the Hawks hosted the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University on Tuesday (Nov. 14) for a 6:00 PM showdown in Pepsi Arena. QU collected wins from Madeline Barton,
Abby Rhodes and
Sereena Baca, but ultimately couldn't get over the hump in a 30-14 loss to kickoff the home slate for the 2023-24 campaign.
The Hawks fought an uphill battle from the onset of the duel, spotting Missouri Baptist 10 free points via forfeits in the 109 and 170 divisions.
Alyssaa Quezaire (MoBap) won the first match of the duel in the 101 class over
Vianey Hernandez (QU) by tech fall (10-0).
Sereena Baca (QU) put the first points on the board for Quincy, defeating Andrea Karagianas (MoBap) by tech fall (10-0) to cut the deficit to 9-4.
In 123 action, Juliana Diaz (MoBap) won her match via tech fall (10-0) over
Trinity Pendergrass (QU) and Riley White (MoBap) won by decision (7-0) over
Autumn Van Bremen (QU) in the 130 class to press the advantage to 16-4 in favor of the Spartans at the midway point of the duel.
Madeline Barton and
Abby Rhodes delivered back-to-back falls in 136 and 143 to put the Hawks right back in it at 16-14. Barton (QU) defeated Abby Mattson (MoBap) at the 2:01 mark and Rhodes (QU) took down Cara Cheng (MoBap) at the 3:25 mark of their match.
Missouri Baptist swept the remaining matches, two by tech fall and one by forfeit to close out the duel. In 155, Anastasia Hardin (MoBap) claimed victory over
Flo Niyokusenga (QU) via tech fall (1:52) followed by a forfeit win for Josette Partney (MoBap) in the 170 division. Faith Marcharia (MoBap) took down
Jayla Jones (QU) by tech fall at the 1:42 mark to close out a 30-14 win for the Spartans.
The Hawks are back in action on Sunday (Nov. 19) for the Lindenwood Open hosted by Lindenwood University. Matches are slated to begin at 9:00 AM in St. Charles, MO.
