Hawks Handle Trojans in Home Opener

QUINCY, Ill. - The Hawks took to the home court for the first time in the 2023-24 campaign, hosting Hannibal-LaGrange University on Wednesday (Nov. 15). Zion Richardson led four Hawks in double digits, becoming the first Hawk to notch a 20 point scoring effort on the young season, pouring in 21 points in a 92-39 victory.

Quincy got off to a slow start, trailing 10-5 heading into the first media timeout. The Hawks cut the deficit to 15-14 heading into the second media timeout roughly eight minutes into the contest.

Anthony McGhee cashed in from long range out of the timeout to make it 17-15 and put QU ahead for the remainder of the contest.

Shortly after at 20-17, the Hawks defense pitched a shutout for the next five minutes, freeing up Quincy for a 12-0 run to build the advantage to 15 at 32-17. The Hawks allowed just a single bucket in the final five minutes to take a comfortable 42-21 advantage into the half.

QU put up a half century of points on the scoreboard in the final 20 minutes while holding the Trojans to 18 in an explosive 92-39 victory.

12 of 13 players on the court for the Hawks found the bottom of the net. Joining Richardson in double figures was John Kelly III (11), Nate Shockey (11) and Jake Hamilton (10), who finished a board shy of the seasons first double-double.

Quincy shot over 50% (34-67) from the field and nearly 40% (11-28) from behind the arc, while holding HLGU to 27.5% (14-51) from the field and 23.5% (4-17) from deep.

Next up for the Hawks is a trip north to Allendale, Michigan, for a Saturday (Nov. 18) showdown with Grand Valley State University. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 PM EST (7:00 PM CST) from GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.
