Box Score Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University women's basketball team opened its season on Friday (Nov. 10) hosting Cedarville University in the GLVC/G-MAC Crossover Tournament. The Hawks fell in close fashion, 54-52. 

The Hawks had a rocky start to its 2023-2024 campaign, trailing Cedarville through the first quarter. Despite the largest gap between the teams at 13 points, the Hawks regrouped and found themselves within three points finishing the first quarter. Two sets of free throws, two layups, and a jump shot helped the Hawks regain their footing going into the second quarter. 

Cyrmirah Williams tossed a layup in, putting the Hawks within one of the Yellowjackets. The Hawks tied it up with a free throw from Acheampomaa Danso with seven minutes to go in the half. Both teams inched their way up the scoreboard in the remaining minutes of the half, Quincy trailing with six heading into the locker room. 

The Hawks continued to creep up on Cedarville through the third quarter, coming within a point or two and then giving up a few baskets in a row. Six Hawks scored in the third quarter, cumulating 15 points for the Hawks in the third alone. 

The momentum in the third period from the Hawks stalled in the fourth. Quincy went five minutes without a point, then trailing by 11 points. Though junior transfer Taya Stevenson's free throws broke the silence for the Hawks, it was Danso's five point stretch in the middle of the quarter that got the Hawks back into the game. Sam Kiel threw a three-pointer in the last 17 seconds which cut the lead to two points, giving Hawk fans hope for an opener win. The Yellowjackets had other plans, running down the last bit of the clock to victory. 

The Hawks will take on the Arrows of Ursuline tomorrow at 7 pm.
