QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy University women's volleyball team notched its 20th straight victory in a three set winner over the Cardinals of William Jewell College on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 28) in Pepsi Arena. The Hawks had three individuals with double digit kills in a (25-17, 25-23, 25-18) sweep of WJC.
Set One:
QU jumped out to an early advantage, taking six of the next eight points on kills from
Emma Wijnbergen,
Susanna Beretti and
Erin Matzke to make it 6-2. William Jewell worked its way back to a two-point deficit at 14-12 before the Hawks used a three-point run on kills from
Luna Van Baars, Wijnbergen and an ace from
Amber Glen to make it 17-12.
The Cardinals hung around until a five-point rally from Quincy at 19-16 put the set out of reach. Kills from Beretti and Matzke along with an ace from
Alice Pavan made it 24-16. Beretti added another kill to the tally to close out a 25-17 win.
Set Two:
WJC took the initiative in the early stages of the second set, capturing five of the first seven points to lead it 5-2. The Hawks continued to trail but remained in striking distance until a six-point run at 12-9 propelled QU back to the forefront 15-12.
William Jewell didn't give up so easily, tying it up at 16-16 and grabbing a lead shortly after 18-17. The Cardinals continued to press the issue, furthering the advantage to three at 22-19 heading down the stretch.
The Hawks responded in a big way, taking the next four points to lead late 23-22. Following a WJC point to even the tally, Quincy took the final two points of the set on an error and a kill from Van Baars to take a 2-0 advantage in the match and 25-23 victory in the set.
Set Three:
Both sides kept it close in the early going, with neither team able to create much space from the other. It was the Hawks who were able to press an advantage past a single point first, doing so by utilizing two errors from WJC to lead it 11-9.
The Cardinals evened the tally at 12-12 until a six-point run from the Hawks effectively ended the frame. A kill and ace from Wijnbergen along with two errors and back-to-back kills from Pavan fueled the run and put Quincy up 18-12. The Hawks rode out the big advantage to a 25-18 winner in the set and 3-0 victory in the match.
Quincy is back in action next week, traveling to Lebanon, IL for a showdown with the Bearcats of McKendree University at 6:00 PM.
