Hawks Resume GLVC Slate with Win Over Panthers

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Fresh off a perfect 3-0 performance at the Midwest Region Crossover last weekend, the Hawks returned to their conference schedule in a GLVC showdown with Drury University on the road.

Quincy dropped the first set before roaring back to take the final three in a 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-19) victory to remain unbeaten in league play and further the new record win streak to 17 matches.

Set One:

QU opened the match on a cold streak, falling behind 5-0 to start the set. The Hawks found some traction soon after, down 8-2, six of the next eight points went Quincy's way to draw within two at 10-8.

After trailing throughout the middle of set, the Hawks used a four-point run at 18-14 to knot the score at 18-18 a piece. QU tied it twice more at 20-20 and 21-21, but couldn't get over the hump in a narrow 25-23 defeat.

Set Two:

Quincy led early 5-3, taking advantage of sloppy play from the Panthers and an ace from Susanna Beretti. The lead grew to five later in the set on kills from Alice Pavan and Luna Van Baars along with back-to-back service aces from Van Baars to make it 11-6.

The Hawks continued to press the advantage, taking five of the next seven points to lead by eight at 16-8. QU didn't let up, taking the lead to double digits on a kill from Van Baars and an error from DU to make it 20-10. Quincy rolled on to a 25-17 set winner to draw the match at 1-1.

Set Three:

QU ran away with the third set early, jumping out to a 5-3 lead before using a nine-point run on five Drury errors, two kills from Pavan and an ace from reigning AVCA DII National Player of the Week, Emma Wijnbergen, to make it 14-3.

Quincy traded blows with the Panthers for the remainder of the set, using the huge early lead to coast to a 25-15 victory. QU hit its best as a team by over .100 points in the frame at .348.

Set Four:

For the first time in the match, both sides kept it close in the early stages of the fourth set until the Hawks used a five-point run at 5-5 to lead 10-5. Quincy kept DU at a safe distance for the remainder of the set, never allowing the Panthers to draw closer than four points.

The Hawks committed only four errors and outhit their opponents by .057 in a 25-19 win in the set and 3-1 victory in the match.

It will be a quick turnaround for QU, getting back into action tomorrow afternoon (Oct. 21) for a 3:00 PM GLVC showdown with the Bearcats of Southwest Baptist University in Bolivar, MO.
