Quincy, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer program took on the nationally ranked University of Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 1). Despite many quick breaks in the final 30 minutes, the Hawks were shut down by the Prairie Stars 1-0.
The Hawks found themselves trailing early in the first half from a Prairie Stars rocket to the back post. Illinois Springfield's goalkeeper was aggressive off his line, but the Hawks put enough pressure on him in the first half to keep him within his box the rest of the game. Though the Hawks battled in the first half, they could not find the back of the net.
The Hawks saw a surge of courage in the final thirty minutes of the second half when they kept possession in the Prairie Stars' half. Three yellow cards were shown to the Prairie Stars, two resulting in free kicks near the box for the Hawks. The Hawks had four corner kicks in two minutes of play, but did not capitalize on the opportunity. Hopes were very high for the Hawks in this second half, and things look promising for the Hawks in the final weeks of conference play based on their performance on Sunday.
George Roke earned five saves in the match.
The Hawks will face Drury University on Friday, October 6th at 7:30 p.m. The game will be held at Legends Stadium.
