QUINCY, Ill. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team learned what life is like as a nationally ranked team.
The Hawks are going to get everyone's best shot.
Indianapolis fired the first salvo Friday night, sweeping the Hawks (25-23, 25-22, 25-18) in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Pepsi Arena.
1st Set
The Hawks opened things on a hot note taking four of the first five points of the match off a kill from
Mattison Norris, two Greyhound attacking errors and a service ace from
Emma Wijnbergen.
U INDY fought their way back to a 10-10 draw midway through the frame. As the set drew on, the Greyhounds hit their stride opening a 22-18 advantage.
Quincy started a rally late, grabbing four straight points to even things at 23-23 thanks to two errors from Indianapolis and two more kills from
Mattison Norris.
Just as the Hawks seemed poised to complete the comeback, U INDY closed the door taking the last two points to round out a 25-23 set victory.
2nd Set
The second set was a back-and-forth affair early on that found Quincy with an 8-6 lead.
Trailing by a couple, the Greyhounds blitzed the Hawks, barraging the QU side of the net to the tune of a six-point swing, shifting the score back in their favor 12-8. As QU struggled to find traction, U INDY continued to apply the pressure, extending their lead to 24-18 late in the set.
With their backs against the wall, the Hawks battled, putting together a four-point run off a kill from
Alyssa Grimm, two Greyhound errors and another ace from
Emma Wijnbergen to pull within two at 24-22.
After fighting back late, once again, as they did in the first set, luck finally ran out for the Hawks as a wide right serve missed the mark, giving Indianapolis the set 25-22.
3rd Set
QU looked to stave off a sweep in the final set, but it was all Greyhounds leading wire to wire coming away with a 25-18 set win, handing Quincy their first loss of the season.
The Hawks recorded their highest hitting percentage of the match in the final frame at .250, but U INDY erupted to close out Quincy hitting a potent .486 with only a single error in the deciding set.
The Hawks look to get back to their winning ways tomorrow, Saturday, October 1, as the #13 Flyers of Lewis University come to town for a 3:00 p.m. Great Lakes Valley Conference bout of nationally ranked squads.
