QUINCY, Ill. – In front of a raucous, engaged crowd, the No. 25 Quincy University Hawks women's volleyball team outlasted the No. 13 Lewis Flyers in five sets in a critical Great Lakes Valley Conference match. The Hawks won in five sets 25-20, 25-14, 22-25, 22-25, 15-12, beating the Flyers for the first time since 2001.
1st Set
LU took the first point of the match to open the contest.
Emily Rehagen tallied the first score for the Hawks to get them on the board and draw things at 1-1. Rehagen could be found quite often in the stat sheet this afternoon after missing the previous match last night, collecting 18 kills and adding 17 digs for Quincy.
After a tightly contested opening to the set, the Hawks started to pull away shortly thereafter. Up 11-9, QU rattled off four straight points on two kills from
Mattison Norris, an error from Lewis and a kill from
Emma Wijnbergen, one of her team leading 19 kills in the match, giving Quincy a 15-9 lead.
The Flyers put together their own four point run to draw within one at 16-17 but were unable to capitalize down the stretch. Three LU errors in the final seven points of the set proved to be to much to overcome as the Hawks took advantage of these crucial miscues to capture the first set of the match 25-20
2nd Set
The second set looked to be an intriguing one until just past the midway mark. Up 12-11, QU stretched it's lead on a five-point run to open a 17-11 edge.
As the set drew closer to its conclusion, the Flyers continued to hurt themselves in the same fashion they did the set before. The LU errors combined with strong play from the Hawks allowed them to put the set out of reach in a hurry.
Alice Pavan took matters into her own hands smashing back-to-back kills to close out the set in very convincing fashion 25-14.
3rd Set
With the prospect of a sweep by their conference foe looming overhead, the nationally ranked Lewis squad that was expected finally showed up. After being held to a negative hitting percentage in an error ridden second set, the Flyers got their mojo going again.
LU put together several long runs throughout the set with the first coming to open up a five-point margin at 10-5. On kills and an ace, the Flyers made it 17-9. The Hawks responded with a 7-0 run of their own to get back to 17-16. Unfortunately for the Hawks, they would drop the 3
rd set to the Flyers.
4th Set
After forcing a 4
th set, the Flyers looked to gain momentum in the early part of the set. Lewis would only commit three errors in the set.
They jumped out to a 6-3 lead. But as the set played on, the Hawks took a 13-12 lead thanks to five-point run fueled by two service aces. Late in the set, the two teams were deadlocked at 21 apiece. The Flyers outscored the Hawks 4-1 and forced a fifth set.
5th Set
With Pepsi Arena rocking, the Hawks took advantage of the home crowd and came out on fire in the decisive set.
Behind the swings of Rehagen, who opened the set with 5 kills to give the Hawks a 7-3 lead. The Flyers would not go down without a fight as they climbed within a point on a couple of different occasions. Wijnbergen finished the match with two big swings for the Hawks.
