Baseball Climbs to 4th in Regional Rankings; Lindenwood Awaits in Opening Round of GLVC Tournament

Quincy, Ill. – The National Collegiate Athletic Association released the second version of the Regional Rankings on May 11th. These are through games as of May 8, 2022.

The Hawks climbed one position to 4th, which is the highest ranked GLVC team. The top 3 spots are held by GLIAC teams: Davenport, Wayne State (Mi). and Nortwood. The top 7 teams make the regional tournament.

After taking 3 of 4 games from the Missouri S&T Miners in the regular season finale, Coach Matt Schissel's team finished the year with a 30-20 overall record and 15-9 in GLVC play. That record earned them the 2 seed in the Blue Division for the GLVC tournament and will face Lindenwood University in the opening round on Thursday, May 12th at 9:00 a.m. at Lou Brock Sports Complex.

In the series, Quincy outscored S&T 38-17. For the season, they have scored 391 runs, which is 5th best in the GLVC.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Quincy is ranked in the top 5 in multiple offensive categories in the GLVC. Leading the way offensively is Dayson Croes and Luke Napleton. Croes is batting .372 while starting in all 50 games for the Hawks. He has 12 doubles and 9 home runs, with 52 RBIs. Napleton has also started in every game this season. He has belted 17 home runs, which currently sits 3rd in Hawk history for single season home runs. The sophomore is batting .349 and leads the team with 56 RBIs.

The Hawk pitching staff currently ranks 3rd in the league with a 5.12 ERA. They are also holding opponents to a batting average of .266, which sits 2nd in the conference. Led by Jay Hammel and Spencer Walker with 73 and 68 strikeouts, respectfully. The Hawks have struck out 410 batters.

Walker currently sits 4th in the GLVC with a 2.73 ERA in 77.2 innings pitched.

SCOUTING THE LIONS
The Lions enter the GLVC tournament as the 3 seed in the Green Division. They finished with an overall record of 27-22 and 16-12 in GLVC play. They finished the regular season losing 3 of 4 the McKendree Bearcats.

Offensively, Lindenwood enters the tournament hitting .268 as a team. They are led by Sam Kissane who is batting .333 with 32 RBIs. The Lions have 3 other hitters batting over .300, in Will Lanxon, Jack Meyer and Alex Gauspohl.

On the mound, Ryan O'Connell leads the Lions with a 2.55 ERA in 13 starts. He has thrown 81.1 innings with an 8-4 record. Six of those 13 starts have been complete games. O'Connell has struck out 80 batters, while only issuing 16 walks. Opponents are hitting .255 against O'Connell this season. Out of the bullpen, Jacob Thompson has recorded 4 saves with a 3.66 ERA in 39.1 innings pitched.

ALL-TIME SERIES
The Hawks and Lions haven't played since the 2014 season, when the Hawks swept the doubleheader at QU Stadium by scores of 5-2 and 6-5.
