Men's Basketball Takes Early Lead, Then Grinds Out Second Straight GLVC Win

The Quincy University men's basketball team triumphed over William Jewell College 65-61 in a close GLVC matchup at Pepsi Arena on Saturday (February 19) afternoon.

The Hawks got off to a quick start, with Adam Moore making a layup twenty-four seconds in to put them on the board and quickly getting to an 8-0 lead, which was cemented by a Silas Crisler layup with 17:12 remaining. QU kept a commanding lead for the remainder of the half, with their final points coming from a Jamaurie Coakley hook-shot jumper with 4:50 remaining, and the final score at halftime being 33-18 QU.

The second half was a lot more rough, with the Hawks being put to a complete stop at points while the Cardinals chipped away at their lead. The Hawks ended up coming back from two ties - one on a Charles Callier three-pointer with 6:18 remaining to make the score 52-49, and again on a Paul Zilinskas free-throw to make it 53-52 - before some back and forth with the lead ensued. However, two free throws from Jalen Stamps with 1:41 remaining made the lead QU's again for good, with two more free throws from Stamps getting the game to its final score.

Nate Shockey led the Hawks with 13 points in 31 minutes of play. Adam Moore scored 12 points and tied Paul Zilinskas for the team lead in rebounds with 7 in 26 minutes of play.
