Comeback Comes Up Short in Final Game of 2022

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Finding themselves trailing heading into the final quarter, the Hawks comeback fell just short in a non-conference contest against the Maryville University Saints on Monday, December 19, 2022. The Saints won by the score of 67-63.

A slow start by both teams in the opening quarter as they would combine to make six shots. The Hawks and Saints were tied at 8 apiece at the end of the opening stanza.
Beth Matas Martin tied the game at 12 early in the 2nd quarter to give her 1,000 collegiate points for her career. The Saints proceeded to go on a 7-0 run to give them their largest lead of the game to this point at 21-16. Maryville would win the quarter and take a 2 point lead into the locker room.

At the midway point of the 3rd quarter, the Maryville lead reached double digits on a 3-pointer by Hunter Stidham, who led them with 15 points. Despite shrinking the margin back to 6, the Saints would end up taking an 11 point into the final quarter.

The Hawks used the opening minutes of the fourth quarter to go on an 8-0 run and get back within striking distance of the Saints. Matas Martin tried to single-handedly will the Hawks to a victory as she scored 9 of the final 11 QU points in the last 3 minutes, including a three off of a turnover with four seconds left.

Cymirah Williams would insert her name into the Hawk record book with her 17th rebound of the game. Those 17 rebounds tie her for 4th most in a single game with 7 other Hawks. The last time a Hawk grabbed 17 or more boards was Marta Rivera on November 27, 2020 against the University of Illinois – Springfield.

QU will return to action after the New Year as they travel to Truman State University on January 5th for a 5:30 p.m. tip.

Game Leaders
Beth Matas Martin: 19 points
