Hawks Pick Up First Conference Win on the Road

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Hawks hit the road for the first time in conference play as they paid a visit to the University of Illinois – Springfield on Thursday, December 1st. QU came away with the 91-80 win.

This is the first victory in Springfield since January 8, 2015.

The Hawks jumped out to a 10-0 lead behind five points from Grace Flanagan in the opening three minutes. The Prairie Stars got the offense going as they finished the quarter on a 17-4 run to take a three point lead after the opening stanza.

Quincy kept the frantic scoring pace into the second quarter as they answered with another 10-0 run over the first 2 minutes to take the 24-17 lead. The game would see three ties in the final four minutes of the quarter as UIS took the 36-33 lead into the locker room.

Beth Matas Martin hit a three to give the Hawks the lead once more 15 seconds into the 2nd quarter. The lead would be stretched out to 8 points after a lay-up by Sarah Nelson at the 4:26 mark. UIS would go on a 10-2 run over the next 90 seconds to tie the contest at 50. QU finished the quarter on a 6-1 run to take the 56-50 lead into the final quarter.

The final quarter would see a combined 64 points, 35 of which was enough to give the Hawks the win. They would go 8 of 13 from the field for 61 percent. Beth Matas Martin and Rylee Denbow went a combined 12 of 12 from the free throw line. In the final 75 seconds, the Hawks did not miss a free throw as they went 12 of 12.

The Hawks return home on Sunday, December 4th with Stephens College coming to the Gem City for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
