QUINCY, Ill. – Opening up conference play in Pepsi Arena against the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds, a team in which the Hawks haven't defeated since January of 2019. Despite leading with three minutes left in the contest, the Greyhounds won 60-57.
The opening frame was a slow go offensively for both sides. In the first 5 minutes of the quarter, a combined two shots from the field fell. A lay-up by
Cymirah Williams tied the contest at 7 with 2 minutes left.
Early in the 2
nd quarter,
Beth Matas Martin hit a 3-pointer to answer the Greyhound three to cut the lead to three. Back-to-back three pointers by
Emma Knipe tied the game at 22 with under thirty seconds to play in the first half.
Sarah Nelson completed her three point play to give the Hawks a 25-24 advantage just sixty seconds into the 3
rd quarter. The Greyhounds went on an 8-0 run to give them an eight point advantage with 4:35 left to play in the 3
rd quarter. The Hawks got the deficit back down to a possession after Matas Martin and Williams converted shots.
In a game that saw the lead change twelve times, the Hawks went up a single point with about seven minutes left in the game. After the Greyhounds retook the lead,
Emma Knipe would make a jumper and get fouled in the process. After converting the free throw, QU saw the lead change back to in their favor. A 3-pointer by
Rylee Denbow gave QU its final lead of the contest as the Greyhounds were able to pull away down the stretch.
The Hawks will wrap up their home stand on Monday, November 28
th with the Lewis University Flyers coming to Pepsi Arena for a 5:30 p.m. tip off.
