Quincy, Ill. -It was Senior Day at Pepsi Arena on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 29) as the Quincy University Women's Volleyball team hosted the Southwest Baptist Bearcats for their final home match of the regular season. QU came away with the win in four sets (18-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-17). The #24 Hawks move to 23-1 on the year and continue their nine-game win streak.
Set 1
The Hawks started things out on the right note grabbing an 8-5 advantage early in the set off a kill from Alice Pavan. The Bearcats battled their way back into the fray near the middle of the set taking advantage of some untimely QU errors to draw things at 12-12.
Shortly after SBU hit their stride finding four kills and utilizing two errors by Quincy to take a convincing 19-14 lead late in the set.
The Hawks tried to stop the skid and find some traction but couldn't put anything together hitting just .028 in the set. The Bearcats found all the holes on Quincy's side of the net enroute to a 25-18 win in the set.
Set 2
Looking to remedy a slow start to senior day at Pepsi Arena, QU took the advantage in the initial stages of the set 6-4 off a kill from Emma Wijnbergen. The Hawks started to create some distance nearing the midway point of the set on a kill from Emily Rehagen and an error by SBU to stretch the lead to 13-7.
The QU offensive unit flipped the script from the first set hounding Southwest Baptist relentlessly at every turn to the tune of a blistering .464 hitting percentage while holding SBU to a .057 clip to get themselves back on track and roll to a 25-15 win drawing the match at 1-1.
Set 3
Fresh off righting the ship in the second set, the Hawks made a big splash in the third. Once again holding the Bearcats to under .100 hitting percentage, QU flourished from start to finish.
Tied at 1-1, Quincy put their foot on the gas and never looked back taking seven of the next eight points to open a comfortable 8-2 thanks to kills from nearly everyone on the Hawks side of the floor. Makayla Knoblauch had a field day during the run dishing dimes to Alyssa Grimm, Mattison Norris, Alice Pavan and Wijnbergen.
Up big but still hungry, QU continued to pile on and put the set further out of reach. A five-point run by the Hawks ballooned the lead to 10 at 13-3 around the mid-set mark. Late in the set at 22-9 the Bearcats put together a five-point run of their own to try and sneak their way back into the mix at 22-12 but it was too little too late as Quincy pressed on to a 25-15 win and a 2-1 advantage in the match.
Set 4
With the first set now a distant memory and the Hawks returning to the form QU volleyball fans have been accustomed to seeing this season, it was time to put the finishing touches on a successful Senior Day. Although the score came out to be closer than the previous two sets, the dominance by the Hawks was still evident. From the get-go QU took the lead and never surrendered it outhitting their opponents by .088 in the set.
SBU kept things close in the beginning phases of the set down just one at 8-7 keeping the hope of forcing a fifth set alive. The hope would be short-lived though as Quincy collected the next seven points to put themselves in the driver seat at 15-7. QU got kills from Emily Rehagen, and Alyssa Grimm during the run as well as two aces from Alice Pavan who finished the match with four service aces.
As time ran short for the Bearcats, the Hawks finished up their business closing things out on a kill from Emily Rehagen to take the set 25-17 and the match 3-1.
The Hawks are back in action on Tuesday (Nov. 1) when they travel to Durant, Oklahoma to take on the Southeastern Oklahoma State Savage Storm for a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
