Hawks Sweep Truman for Sixth Straight Win

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Quincy University women's volleyball team looked to continue its five-match winning streak taking on the Truman State Bulldogs on Friday (Oct. 21) for a GLVC showdown on the road. The no. 25 Hawks swept TSU in straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 25-19)

With the win, Quincy moves to 20-1 on the season and 7-1 in league play tied atop the conference standings with Missouri- St. Louis. The Hawks have six matches left with only four of them against opponents in the conference.

Set 1
QU pulled ahead early at 6-3 with some help from three attacking errors by the Bulldogs. Truman State came back shortly after to tie things, but errors continued to plague them as they would throughout the whole set. The Hawks took advantage and started to distance themselves mid set, opening a 16-13 lead on a kill from Mattison Norris.

Finding the spark they needed, Quincy never lost the lead again from that point on and cruised to a 25-19 win in the first set holding TSU to a .100 hitting percentage in the frame. The Hawks only hit at a .118 clip in the set but gutted it out with the help of ten errors by their opponent to take the advantage early in the match.

Set 2
In the second set Quincy opened a lead early and kept their foot on the pedal. Up 7-5, QU put together a four-point run on a kill from Emily Rehagen and three kills from Alice Pavan to push the lead to six at 11-5. The Bulldogs couldn't shake the error issue they had in the first quarter, committing four more in the following six points to put the Hawks in front big at 15-7.

Later in the set, TSU tried to start a comeback taking three straight points to bring the score to 18-11 but it would be too little too late. QU kept the pressure coming, never letting the Bulldogs get back in the match down the stretch. Emma Wijnbergen put home the last two kills of the set to solidify a 25-17 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Wijnbergen led the Hawks in hitting percentage and kills on the day at a blistering .516 with 18 kills.

Set 3
In the hunt for their 12th sweep of the season, Quincy pushed the envelope early, opening an 8-5 lead on a kill from Emily Rehagen off a dish from Mikayla Knoblauch. Shortly after QU put together a three-point run to move up 13-8.

Poised to close out the match the Hawks flexed their muscles pushing the lead even further later in the set to 19-13. Down big, Truman State made a push of their own to try and get back in the match pulling within three at 21-18.

The Hawks put down the comeback attempt winning four of the last five points to finish off TSU 25-19 to take the set and the match.

The women's volleyball team continues its weekend road trip with a game tomorrow afternoon, Saturday (Oct. 22) at 1:00 p.m. in Liberty, Missouri facing off against the Cardinals of William Jewell for a GLVC conference showdown.
