Hawks Best Greyhounds In Double OT Thriller

The Quincy University men's basketball team triumphed 86-84 over the University of Indianapolis in a thrilling double-overtime matchup at Pepsi Arena on Thursday (Jan 27) night.

The first points and first lead for QU came with 18:55 remaining in the first half, when a layup and a free throw from Charles Callier made the score 3-2 Hawks. Callier would later make three more free throws, taking the lead back for the Hawks and making the score 8-7 with 15:11 remaining. Callier's hot streak only continued just a few minutes later, with back to back three pointers making it 14-11 Hawks with 13:18 remaining. QU were able to keep the lead for most of the half, but in the final five minutes the game became competitive again, with the lead going back and forth quite a bit before a buzzer-beating three-pointer from Paul Zilinskas ended the half with a bang, with the score being 34-32 Hawks heading into halftime.

The second half did not begin well for QU, with the Greyhounds taking the lead nearly immediately. However, the Hawks fought back, with Zilinskas tying the game with a jumper and then landing two free throws to make the score 46-44 Hawks with 13:46 remaining. QU went on a bit of a hot streak afterwards, with two free throws from Jamaurie Coakley making the score 51-46 with 10:37 remaining. The game returned to being back and forth afterwards, with the Greyhounds eventually pulling away before a pair of Zilinskas layups tied the game at 67 with thirteen seconds remaining. The score remained tied afterwards, necessitating the first round of overtime.

Said first round started well for QU, with Coakley making a layup to make it 69-67 with 4:15 remaining. Another tie was achieved by the Greyhounds before being broken again by the Hawks, with jumpers from Jalen Stamps and Zilinskas making it 73-69 with 2:27 remaining. The back and forth continued afterwards, with the last points being scored by the Hawks in the first period of overtime coming from two free throws by Coakley, making it 78-75 Hawks with eight seconds remaining. However, when the buzzer sounded, the game had been tied again at 78, necessitating a second round of overtime.

It didn't take long for the second overtime to become exciting, with a layup from Nate Shockey and two free throws from Zilinskas making it 82-78 Hawks with 4:13 remaining. The Hawks didn't lose the lead for the rest of the game, with the final points for QU coming from two Coakley free throws with fifty-one seconds remaining. The Hawks played great defense for the rest of the game, leading to a close and thrilling 86-84 victory.

Paul Zilinskas led the Hawks with 22 points in 44 minutes of playtime, and also got 8 rebounds. Nate Shockey scored 16 points and led the team with 9 rebounds in 50 minutes, Charles Callier scored 12 points in 20 minutes, and Jamaurie Coakley scored 11 points with 8 points in 31 minutes.
