Men's Soccer Battles McKendree to the Wire In 2-2 Draw

LEBANON, Ill. - The Quincy University men's soccer team played the McKendree Bearcats to a 2-2 draw on Friday night (Sept. 24). The Hawks tied the game on an Aubrey Reis penalty kick with less than three minutes left in regulation, but QU was unable to find the golden goal in both overtime periods.

QU's offense was quick to strike when Craig Chisholm sent a ball into the box from the far left side. Alsadiq Hasan met the keeper in the box, and the ball was loose inside the 6-yard line. Jack Rhead was there to clean things up and put Quincy on the board with a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the contest.

This was the lone goal of the opening half as the Hawks got off just three shots in the first 45 minutes. Despite this, QU held the lead, 1-0.

McKendree wasted little time and notched things up three minutes into the second half. The Bearcats scored in the 48th minute to tie the game 1-1. The home team was not done yet as they struck again in the 70th minute. This gave McKendree a 2-1 advantage.

With time running out, the Hawks caught a break. Aubrey Reis sent a cross from the far right sideline into Cole Hayes on the outer left portion of the goalie box. Hayes ripped a shot off the defender's arm, and a handball was called.

Reis stepped up with the game on the line and beat the keeper to tie the game. Just over two-minutes remained in regulation.

Neither team scored in the little bit of time remaining, but QU had a couple of quality chances in the first overtime. In the 98th minute, Reis missed a shot high, then shortly after, Alsadiq Hasan nearly won the game.

Hasan was given a feed from Hayes along the left side inside McKendree's box. The captain midfielder sent a shot with his left foot that bent left to right, grazed the crossbar, and went out of bounds. The game moved to a second overtime.

Less than a minute into the final extra period, Cole Hayes was fouled just outside the box. Macker Little took the free kick and struck a good shot on frame. McKendree's keeper laid out with full extension to his left and got just enough of a deflection to keep the ball out of the net.

The game ended in a 2-2 draw. It was QU's first draw since March 19th of last year against Lewis.
