QUINCY, Ill. - It took just under 110 minutes and two overtime periods for the Quincy University women's soccer team to pull out a 4-3 win over Maryville on Sunday (Sept. 19).
Aliyah Rottger scored the game-winning goal with 35 seconds left in the second overtime, and
Lauren Crane added a pair of goals.
The Hawks grabbed the early lead when
Paige Anderson connected with
Morgan Evans on a long feed from the back line. Evans beat the defender and fit a shot inside the near goal post to give QU the 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.
Less than ten minutes later, Quincy's offense struck again.
Aliyah Rottger found
Lauren Crane in the middle of the field at the top of the box. Crane ripped a shot before the defender came up to make the stop and beat the keeper to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead.
The Saints made things interesting before halftime as they scored in the 26th minute and just before the break in the 43rd minute. Both teams went to the locker room tied 2-2.
Less than ten minutes into the second period, a foul was called on Maryville's goalkeeper after a corner kick which set up the Hawks with a penalty kick.
Lauren Crane stepped up and knocked in the shot to give QU a 2-0 lead. It was her second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
This lead stood for over 26 minutes until the Saints equalized. Maryville's forward ran past the defense and scored in the 82nd minute to tie the game 3-3.
As the game went to the first overtime, the two teams combined for just one total shot. A second overtime was needed to decide a winner.
The game looked like it may end in a tie until less than a minute was left on the clock.
Jessica Felix collected a touch near midfield and found a speedy
Aliyah Rottger sprinting down the left side. Rottger beat the defender and sent a shot into the back of the net as Quincy won 4-3.
Quincy was efficient with their shot selection on Sunday as they sent a total of eight shots in the game with six on goal. Four of those six shots went in.
