Men's Soccer Drops Sunday Slate to Maryville

QUINCY, Ill. - The Quincy men's soccer team hosted Maryville on Sunday (Sept 19) afternoon and held a 2-1 lead in the second half, but the Hawks fell 3-2.

This was the first meeting of these two teams since last spring in the GLVC semifinal when the Saints topped QU and went on to win the GLVC championship.

Maryville threw the first punch in the 16th minute when Mirza Hasecic scored for the Saints. Hasecic led the GLVC with 27 points last season on 12 goals. He had two goals today for the Saints.

The Saints held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but Cole Hayes struck just one minute and 42 seconds into the second half to tie the game at 1-1. Hayes buried his third goal of the season after the ball was played forward by Nick Chapman and Alex Lehmann

Less than two minutes later, Alsadiq Hasan won a ball outside the box and played it to Jack Rhead who fired the ball right under the crossbar to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute.

A key moment in the game came when Aubrey Reis appeared to score moments later to give QU a two-goal lead, but offsides was called and the goal was taken away.

The Saints took advantage of the opportunity by scoring goals in the 62nd and 65th minute to take a 3-2 lead and fended off the Hawks' attack for the rest of the match.

Next Up
Quincy will travel to the Saint Louis area next weekend to face McKendree (Sept 24) and UMSL (Sept 26).
